Sustainability refers to three things: environmental, economic and social which are all influence each other. Since the social impact of a business is easy to identify but difficult to measure, our approach to social responsibility includes empowering ourselves and people to give back to their communities, supporting them to tackle social challenges on a global scale, and ensuring that we run our firm in a way that addresses environmental risks and social issues.
We continue to seek out ways to give back to the communities we live and work within through actively involved in local wisdom since we believe our company has an opportunity, and a responsibility, to use our knowledge and our capabilities to help address the local social and natural environment issues. It matters greatly to those living near their operations how they are carried out and what degree of care is taken over impacts on.
Access to clean water and sanitation are underlying human basic needs. UNICEF recorded that globally around 663 million people had lived without easy access to clean water and about 2.4 billion people lacked of basic sanitation facilities. To tackle these challenges, the Indonesian government has been putting tremendous efforts to increase the access to clean water, from around 74% (BPS report in 2018) to 100%, under the 2019’s national program of “100% Universal Access to Water and Sanitation”.
BAI will continue to focus to penetrate other water related businesses and implement new technology such as waste water treatment, and water recycling.
The nearest river from the project is the Duri River, which is 10m width and 6m depth with the flow of 16.89m3/s. This rate meets the intake requirement of the project. Additionally, the water delivery distance is short, so the Duri River would be a water source in this project. Fully aware of the impact of its operational activities to nature, the Company places caring and competent human resources. This organization is in charge of the front line in ensuring the achievement of the Company’s vision and mission related to the environment and invites all Company people to protect each other in nature.
According to the collecting data, the intake area is neither wide nor deep. For the safety and reliability, riverbed intake pump room should be chosen in the project preferentially, which is consisted of intake head, inflow runner and pump station.
The design scale of water intake system is 830 m3/h (0.23 m3/s). The river flows through intake head, bar screen, inflow runner, and finally into water pond. The river water pond is divided into two separated parts, each part has intake pumps, one for operation and one for standby. When the single part is under maintenance, the water intake capacity of pump house is 415m3/h. Two DN500 welded steel pipes are arranged to deliver river water. In this way, the other one can also meet the requirement while another is in the maintenance.
Refer to the above data, it’s figured that the Company water consumption only take a part around 1.36% consumption from the total water source in Duri River.
All activities of the Company are preceded by an Environmental Impact Analysis to identify the environmental impact that may occur and develop a plan to monitor and manage these impacts. In accordance with the nature and scale of activities to be carried out as well as the applicable regulations, there are environmental documents such as the Environmental Impacts Analysis (AMDAL) and Environmental Management Plan/Environmental Monitoring Plan (RKL/ RPL) for broader activities with more significant impacts, as well as Environmental Management Efforts/Environmental Monitoring Efforts (UKL/UPL) document for activities with less significant impacts.
For the land acquisition process, the Company establishes Standard Operating Procedures in Procurement Procedures. This procedure stipulates that consultation with relevant stakeholders is carried out to obtain the compensation value of the deal and the settlement of disputed land. If the consensus does not reach an agreement, then the process is conducted through the legal process mediated by the government.
The Company’s Green Factory begins with an accurate factory planning, which takes into account environmental sustainability from the outset. To achieve the vision of Company, the Company established 4 environmental management program which are used as reference on every stage of the factory planning, such as:
- Prepare a definitive plan of enviromental, including the Annual Environment Plan Document.
- Build and maintain in a controlled manner the means to control erosion in all of the factory locations, either the already final or existing ones.
- Develop and utilize local plant species and other productive crops.
- Control negative impacts on water quality, air quality, soil quality, solid and liquid wastes as well as B3 wastes.
Analysis on Land Cover Map and Forest Status Map advised that proposed location of the Project is located on the area categorized as dried cultivated area. Terrestrial and aerial observation using drone indicated that the most area of proposed location for Alumina refinery plant and associated facilities dominated by bush and mix crops. While the proposed location for access road connecting plant and proposed IPC Port is dominated by paddy fields.
Giving the Project is located on dried cultivated area, biodiversity of the area is considered to be low. There is no indication of the existing protected wildlife and/or vegetation.
Revegetation at open space area with perennials and shrubs that can absorb dust and emission at PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia.
Risk Management Work Unit is lead by a Manager and is under the Main Directorate. The objective of establishing the Risk Management Work Unit is to make sure that risk management is implemented in line with the prevailing standard thus ensure the achievement of the Company’s objective.

The implementation of risk management within the PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia has been implemented effectively and consistent with the fundamental principles of risk management as described on the beginning part of this section.
In the future, Community Development will be created to support and revitalize communities, especially those that are impoverished or struggling. This program will deal with the development of local needed such as school, housing, and other. They can also be involved in a wide range of community services that meet local needs such as education, job training, healthcare, commercial development, and other social programs.
CSR programs play a critical role in building community wealth for several key reasons. A company's sense of responsibility towards the community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates. Companies express this spirit by contributing educational and social programs, and by earning adequate returns on the employed resources.
